Why Sonic Balance Combines Sound and Body Vibration

Most of us know that music can change how we feel.
A familiar song can lift our mood. Slow, gentle music can help us unwind. Certain sounds can make us feel energized, emotional, focused, or deeply relaxed.
But what happens when sound is not only heard through the ears—but physically felt through the body?
That question is part of what led to the development of vibroacoustic approaches, where low-frequency sound vibrations are delivered through a chair, table, bed, or other surface while a person listens to music.
It is also one of the principles behind Sonic Balance.
Sonic Balance combines carefully selected sound and music with low-frequency physical vibration delivered through the body. We also pay attention to the individual response rather than assuming that every person will react to the same sound or frequency in exactly the same way.
An interesting study published in the Nordic Journal of Music Therapy helps explain why exploring the combination of music and vibration makes sense.
Music Alone, Vibration + Music, or Simply Rest?
In the study, researcher Eha Rüütel compared three different experiences:
- listening to relaxing music,
- listening to the same music while also receiving low-frequency vibroacoustic stimulation,
- and simply resting quietly without sound.
The research was conducted in two experiments using healthy university students. Each condition lasted approximately 22 minutes.
During the vibroacoustic sessions, participants lay on a bed that transmitted low-frequency vibration through the body while relaxing music played. Instead of testing one so-called “special” frequency, the researchers used several frequencies ranging from approximately 38 to 68 Hz.
Researchers measured physiological changes such as blood pressure, pulse rate and muscle characteristics. They also asked participants to describe changes in how they felt—including relaxation, comfort, physical tension, pain, freshness, concentration and general well-being.
The results were interesting—and they are important to interpret carefully.
Rest by Itself Is Powerful
Blood pressure, pulse rate and muscle measurements moved in a direction associated with relaxation during all three conditions.
That means people relaxed while listening to music.
They relaxed while receiving music plus vibration.
But they also relaxed while simply lying quietly.
This is an important scientific point.
It would be easy to look at a drop in heart rate or blood pressure after a vibroacoustic session and conclude that the vibration caused the change. This study reminds us that some of that change may simply come from stopping, lying down, feeling comfortable and allowing the body to rest.
At Sonic Balance, we think that distinction matters.
The goal should not be to take every positive change and automatically credit the technology. A good question is instead:
What changed—and what may have contributed to that change?
That is a much more useful way to learn.
Where Music and Vibroacoustics Began to Look Different
Although physiological relaxation occurred across all three conditions, differences became clearer when researchers looked at how participants actually felt.
Music and vibroacoustic stimulation generally produced more positive changes in perceived health and comfort than silence alone.
The vibroacoustic condition was associated with changes toward feeling more patient, protected, good, fresh, light and painless in one of the experiments.
The authors ultimately described the effects of vibroacoustic stimulation as involving a reduction in both psychological and physical tension.
That distinction is fascinating.
A physiological monitor tells us one part of the story.
The person's experience tells us another.
Both matter.
Someone may show only a modest physiological change while reporting that their racing thoughts became quiet, their body felt lighter or they experienced a level of relaxation they rarely feel.
Another person might show a noticeable physiological shift while subjectively feeling that “nothing dramatic happened.”
Human physiology and human experience do not always move in perfect synchronization.
This Is Why Sonic Balance Looks at More Than One Measurement
Sonic Balance is designed around this idea.
Rather than judging a session from a single number, we are interested in both objective and subjective response.
One measurement we use is heart rate variability, or HRV.
HRV looks at variations in the timing between heartbeats. These patterns can provide information about how the autonomic nervous system is responding during different conditions.
We can compare physiological patterns before, during and after portions of a Sonic Balance experience while also asking the person what they actually noticed.
Did physical tension change?
Did their mind become quieter?
Did they feel calmer?
Did discomfort change?
Did they feel heavier, lighter, sleepy, alert, focused or deeply relaxed?
That combination of measurement and personal experience can potentially tell us much more than either one alone.
There Probably Isn't One “Magic Frequency”
Another part of the study is particularly important.
Earlier vibroacoustic practitioners had proposed that certain low-frequency ranges might influence different areas or functions of the body. However, the paper also acknowledges that researchers had not consistently demonstrated that one specific frequency produces the same response across different people—or even consistently within the same person.
We think that is an important clue.
Instead of asking:
“What is the healing frequency?”
A potentially more useful question may be:
“How does this particular person respond to this particular stimulation?”
That is one of the areas Sonic Balance is especially interested in exploring.
Two people can listen to the same piece of music and have completely different emotional reactions.
Why should we automatically assume their nervous systems will respond identically to the same vibration?
Sonic Balance therefore explores personalization rather than relying entirely on a fixed recipe that is identical for everyone.
That does not mean we have proven that personalized frequency selection is superior.
We haven't.
It means it is a testable question worth investigating. And we are and we are seeing remarkable results.
Repeated Sessions May Be Important
Another interesting observation from the study involved repetition.
In the first experiment, two vibroacoustic exposures produced the greatest number of positive changes in participants' perceived health and comfort.
The authors also noted that one session was not enough to clearly demonstrate a unique treatment effect of vibroacoustics compared with music alone. They discussed the possibility that vibroacoustic stimulation may have a cumulative effect, although this particular study was not designed to establish that conclusively.
In our own case studies we are finding that some clients do need consistent and repetitive sessions. And some can get beneficial results in one or two sessions.
This raises another question we find very interesting:
Is the response to repeated sound-and-vibration experiences different from the response to a single session?
Rather than only asking how someone feels five minutes after one session, it may be valuable to watch patterns across time.
Does their starting physiology change?
Do they settle more quickly?
Does their subjective experience change?
Do certain responses become more consistent over several sessions?
Those are much more interesting questions than simply asking whether someone “liked it.”
Louder Doesn't Necessarily Mean Better
The study also compared different sound intensities.
Within levels that participants could comfortably tolerate, intensity did not significantly determine the effects.
That is another useful lesson.
More vibration is not automatically better vibration.
The goal is not to shake the body as strongly as possible.
Comfort, individual response and the overall experience matter.
What This Study Does—and Does Not—Tell Us
It is important not to overstate this research.
This was a relatively small study involving healthy young adults, published in 2002.
It does not prove that vibroacoustic stimulation treats disease.
It does not prove that one particular frequency heals a particular condition.
And because physiological relaxation occurred even during silent rest, it does not prove that vibration alone caused the reductions in blood pressure, pulse or muscle measurements.
What it does show is something more modest—and still very interesting:
Rest changes physiology. Music changes the experience of relaxation. And combining music with low-frequency vibration may influence the experience even further.
The study also raises important questions about repeated exposure, individual response and the relationship between what physiological measurements show and what a person actually feels.
Those are exactly the kinds of questions worth continuing to explore.
